Understanding Piano Types & Moving Requirements
-
Upright pianos (including spinets, consoles, studios, and full uprights) feature a vertical design that makes them more space-efficient but creates specific moving challenges:
Weight concentrated in the back, making them prone to tipping
Tall, narrow form can be advantageous in hallways but difficult on stairs
Generally require 2-4 experienced movers
Rarely need disassembly for moving
More stable during transport than grands
-
Grand pianos (baby grand, parlor grand, and concert grand) demand even greater expertise:
Horizontal orientation creates awkward maneuvering challenges
Large footprint requires ample space for navigation
Elegant legs are surprisingly fragile and must be removed for safe transport
Delicate soundboard and pedal lyre require meticulous protection
Must be tilted onto side on specialized skid board
Always require 3-5 professional movers
More susceptible to tuning instability after moves due to complex string layout
Both types share one critical requirement: they must never be moved on their backs or in positions that stress their structural integrity.
